La prononciacion qu'ei [lum'bja], shens nasalizacion finau. Las fòrmas ancianas que son Lombiaa en 1402, Lombyaa en 1490, Lombian en 1546, Lombia (mapa de Cassini, a la fin deu sègle XVIIIau), [2].
Segon Dauzat, lo nom qu'ei escur, benlhèu prelatin com Lombèrs [3] .
Segon Miquèu Grosclaude, Lombiar ei probablament pas aparentat dab Lombèrs nimei dab Lumbier (Illiberri = vila nava). La finau -aa, shens nasala, qu'implica ua consonanta latenta qui ei probablament -r (a despieit de la fòrma analogica de 1546); que sembla donc estar lo sufixe -are, collectiu vegetau. Lo vegetau qu'ei ulmus, « orme ». Dab lo sufixe -are, que hè olmear, puish olmiar, puish lo grope -lm que crèa un b eufonic, d'aquí ombiar; l- iniciau qu'ei devuda a l'aglutinacion de l'article definit [2].
