La prononciacion qu'ei [ar'jet]. Las fòrmas ancianas que son Argiet, en 1383, Arzet en 1695, Arget (mapa de Cassini, a la fin deu sègle XVIIIau) [2].
Segon Miquèu Grosclaude, lo nom ei pas un derivat de argilla (« argela »). Se la comuna èra sablosa (mès es pas atau), que poirén supausar un derivat d'arena, « sable », dab lo sufixe collectiu -etum : arenetum > arenet > are(n)et > areet > ariet; l'autor balha pas de solucion [2].
