Segon Dauzat, Vesingran qu'ei vicinum grande en latin, lo gran comunau [3]. Alan Novèl, citat per Miquèu Grosclaude, que precisa lo latin vicinum, derivat de vicus, a lo sens de « vilatge » [2].
