Ο NGC 688 είναι ραβδωτός σπειροειδής γαλαξίας[3][4] με εξαιρετικά υψηλό ρυθμό σχηματισμού νέων αστέρων.[5][6] Απέχει 190 εκατομμύρια έτη φωτός[6] και βρίσκεται στον αστερισμό Τρίγωνον. Ανακαλύφθηκε από τον αστρονόμο Χάινριχ ντ' Αρέ (Heinrich d'Arrest) στις 16 Σεπτεμβρίου 1865[5] και ανήκει στο σμήνος γαλαξιών Abell 262.[7][8][9]
