Ο NGC 4312 είναι σπειροειδής γαλαξίας χωρίς κεντρική «ράβδο»[3] που απέχει περίπου 55 εκατομμύρια έτη φωτός[2] και βρίσκεται στον αστερισμό Κόμη Βερενίκης. Ανακαλύφθηκε από τον αστρονόμο Ουίλιαμ Χέρσελ (William Herschel) στις 14 Ιανουαρίου 1787[4] και ανήκει στο Σμήνος της Παρθένου.[5][6][7] Είναι επίσης γαλαξίας LINER[8] και έχει απολέσει αέρια στο παρελθόν εξαιτίας των πιέσεων που δέχτηκε από το διαγαλαξιακό πλάσμα που τον περιβάλλει.[9][Σημ 1]

Στον NGC 4312 ενδέχεται επίσης να υπάρχει μελανή οπή η μάζα της οποίας εκτιμάται πως είναι από 10000 έως 300000 ηλιακές μάζες.[10]
