Ο NGC 4246 είναι σπειροειδής γαλαξίας στον αστερισμό Παρθένο. Η ταχύτητά του συγκριτικά με την κοσμική ακτινοβολία υποβάθρου είναι 4064 ± 24 km/s και κατά συνέπεια βάσει του νόμου του Χαμπλ ο γαλαξίας απέχει 195,5 ± 13,7.[1] Άλλες μελέτες, που δεν βασίζονται στην μετατόπιση προς το ερυθρό, δίνουν εκτίμηση 172,01 ± 10,57 εκατομμυρίων ετών φωτός.[2] Τον ανακάλυψε ο αστρονόμος Ουίλιαμ Χέρσελ (William Herschel) στις 13 Απριλίου 1784[3] ενώ στις 30 Οκτωβρίου 1899 τον παρατήρησε και ο Άρνολντ Σβάσμαν (Arnold Schwassmann) και έτσι ο γαλαξίας καταγράφτηκε και ως IC 3113.[3]

Σύμφωνα με τη βάση SIMBAD ο NGC 4246 είναι επίσης γαλαξίας LINER.[4] Μαζί με τους γαλαξίες NGC 4235 και NGC 4247 καταγράφεται ως Holm 359 στο έργο του Έρικ Χόλμπεργκ (Erik Holmberg) A Study of Double and Multiple Galaxies Together with Inquiries into some General Metagalactic Problems.[5]

Υπερκαινοφανείς

Παρατηρήθηκαν δύο υπερκαινοφανείς στον NGC 4273:

  • Ο SN 1975C, αγνώστου τύπου, στις 15 Μαρτίου 1975.[6][7]
  • Ο SN 1984U, αγνώστου τύπου, στις 2 Μαρτίου 1984.[8][9]
