Una version evoluida intitulada Windows Server 2003 R2 foguèt finalizada lo 6 de decembre de 2005. Son successor, Windows Server 2008, es sortit lo 4 de febrièr de 2008. Lo 14 de julhet de 2015, Microsoft cessa lo suport, çò que significa l'arrèst de la publicacion de correctius de seguretat[1], e encoratja la migracion cap a Windows Server 2012 R2.
