Funkcija

L-fukoza je ključni šećer u glikoproteinima i drugim složenim ugljikohidratima jer može biti uključena u mnoge funkcionalne uloge ovih makromolekula, kao što je prepoznavanje ćelija-ćelija. Donor fukozila za ove fukozilovane oligosaharide je GDP-beta-L-fukoza.

Postoje dva alternativna puta za biosintezu GDP-fukoze; glavni put pretvara GDP-alfa-D-manozu u GDP-beta-L-fukozu. Protein kodiran ovim genom učestvuje u alternativnom putu koji je prisutan u određenim tkivima sisara, kao što su u jetri i bubrezima, a čini se da funkcioniše kao spasonosni put za ponovno korištenje L-fukoze koja proizlazi iz prometa glikoproteina i glikolipida.

Ovaj put uključuje fosforilaciju L-fukoze. kako bi se formirao beta-L-fukoza-1-fosfat, a zatim kondenzacijama beta-L-fukoza-1-fosfata sa GTP-om fukoza-1-fosfat gvanililtransferaze za formiranje GDP-beta-L-fukoze.[6]
