Giebel (1855)

Prototcyon ialah satu genus canid omnivor kecil pupus yang endemik di Amerika Selatan semasa pertengahan hingga Hujung Pleistosen yang hidup dari 1.2 Ma hingga 11,000 tahun lalu dan wujud selama hampir-hampir 1.189 juta tahun.[1]

Taksonomi

Protocyon dinamai oleh Giebel (1855) dan diperuntukkan kepada Canidae oleh Carroll (1988).[2]

Taburan fosil

Tinggal fosil terbatas di Amerika Selatan dengan spesimen ditemui dari Chuquisaca, Bolivia serta Buenos Aires, Argentina dan dua buah tapak di Brazil.
