Praetor (bahasa Latin untuk "dia yang pergi sebelum orang lain") merujuk kepada jawatan sivil yang bertanggungjawab atas pentadbiran undang-undang. Para praetor adalah dipilih oleh Comitia centuriata, suatu majlis yang majoritinya terdiri dari golongan yang terkaya di Rom. Pada 242 SM, terdapat dua jenis praetor: praetor urbanus, yang ditempatkan di kota Rom dan praetor peregrinus, yang bertanggungjawab untuk seluruh Itali. Pada 180 SM, tanggungjawab praetor urbanus telah ditambah iaitu sebagai pengerusi mahkamah bagi gabenor-gabenor yang korup. Seorang praetor diberi enam pengawal (lictores) dan dibenarkan memakai toga dengan tepian berwarna ungu.
