現在の称号

現在のイギリス国王であるチャールズ3世（在位：2022年 9月8日 - ）の、連合王国における正式な称号は、1953年制定の国王称号法^[1]に従って制定された、以下のものとなる。

「グレートブリテンおよび北部アイルランド連合王国」はいわゆるイギリス、「その他のレルム」は「Commonwealth realm（英連邦王国）」の構成国家のうち、イギリスを除く諸王国を指す。英連邦王国を構成する諸王国でも「グレートブリテンおよび北部アイルランド連合王国」を当該国名に入れ替えた同様の形式の称号を持つが、「信仰の擁護者」については付加されない国が多い。

国王が保持するその他の称号

イギリス国王はその他、自治領や領域に関する称号を保有している

ノルマンディー公

征服王ウィリアム1世が保持していた称号であり、フランスのノルマンディー地方の領有権をも意味していた。しかしフランスの公国領は次第に縮小し、1204年にはチャンネル諸島を除いてフランス王国の手に落ちた。1259年、ヘンリー3世はノルマンディーの請求権を放棄した。しかし1420年のトロワ条約によってヘンリー5世はフランス国王とともにノルマンディー公の継承権を獲得し、彼の息子であるヘンリー6世以降のイングランド国王はフランス国王とノルマンディー公を称するようになった。フランス国王号は1801年に使用を停止したが、ノルマンディー公はそれ以降も称している。

またイギリスの王室属領であるチャンネル諸島のジャージーおよびガーンジーの元首としての称号は現在でも「ノルマンディー公」であり、両地域における行事ではこの称号が用いられる。

ランカスター公

ランカスター公であったヘンリー4世がイングランド国王位につき、息子ヘンリーをランカスター公に封じた。その後ヘンリー5世が即位して以降は国王が保持する公爵位となっている。

マン島領主

グレートブリテン島とアイルランド島の間に浮かぶマン島は、イングランド貴族であるスタンリー家が代々マン島領主（英語: Lord of Mann）として統治していた。1786年のマン島購入法（英語版）によってマン島は王室財産となり、「マン島領主」の称号は国王が保持する称号の一つとなった。

陛下号

国王に対する呼びかけとしては、「（His/Her） Majesty」が用いられており、日本では通例陛下と訳される。

12世紀頃からイングランド国王は「Highness」（殿下）の称号を用いてきた。この称号は当時のヨーロッパの君主である神聖ローマ帝国、フランス王国、カスティーリャ王国、アラゴン王国でも用いていた称号に該当し、当時は最高の格式を持っていた。しかし16世紀になると神聖ローマ皇帝とフランス国王は「Majesty」に該当する称号を用い始めた。イングランドにおいて「Majesty」の称号はそれ以前にも散発的に用いられていたが、ヘンリー8世の時代から本格的に用いられ始めた。ただし国王の称号として「Majesty」のみが使用されたわけではなく、「Highness」や「Grace」（グレース (称号)（英語版））も混用されていた。

またスコットランドでは当初「Grace」が用いられていたが、後に「Majesty」となり、ジェームズ1世がイングランド・スコットランド両国王となると「Majesty」が正式となった。実際の使用に際しては「最も優れた陛下（英語版）」「最も慈悲深き陛下（英語版）」といった成句としても用いられている。
