Funkcija
Ovaj gen kodira izlučeni, homodimerni glikoprotein koji je eksprimiran u velikom broju tkiva i može imati autokrine ili parakrine funkcije. Kodirani protein ima 10 od svojih 15 konzerviranih cisteinskih ostataka među staniokalcinskim članovima porodice i fosforiliziranih pomoću kazein-kinaze 2 isključivo na svojim ostacima serina.
Njegov C-kraj sadrži skupinu histidinskih ostataka koji mogu stupiti u interakciju s metalnim ionima. Protein može imati ulogu u regulaciji transporta bubrežnog i crijevnog kalcija i fosfata, ćelijskog metabolizma ili homeostaze ćelijskog kalcija/fosfata. Konstitutivna prekomjerna ekspresija ljudskog staniokalcina 2 kod miševa rezultirala je pre- i postnatalnim ograničenjem rasta, smanjenim rastom kostiju i skeletnih mišića i organomegalijom. Ekspresiju ovog gena inducira estrogen i mijenja u nekim slučajevima raka dojke.[7]
