Pion
U fizici čestica pion (ili pi mezon, označen grčkim slovom pi: π) je bilo koja od tri subatomske čestice: π0, π+, i π−. Svaki pion se sastoji od kvarka i antikvarka i stoga je mezon. Pioni su najlakši mezoni i općenito najlakši hadroni. Oni su nestabilni, sa nabijenim pionima π+ i π− propada nakon prosječnog životnog vijeka od 26.033 nanosekunde (2,6033×10−8 sekunde) i neutralni pion π0 propada nakon mnogo kraćeg životnog vijeka od 85 attosekundI (8,5×10−17 sekundi).[1] Nabijeni pioni najčešće se raspadaju u mione i muon neutrina, dok se neutralni pioni uglavnom raspadaju u gama zrake.

Pion također igra ključnu ulogu u kosmologiji, namećući gornju granicu energije kosmičkih zraka koje preživljavaju sudare sa kosmičkom mikrotalasnom pozadinom, preko granice Greisen – Zatsepin – Kuzmin.
Upotreba piona u medicinskoj terapiji zračenjem, poput raka, istraživana je u brojnim istraživačkim institucijama,[2]
