RSS — сямейства XML-фарматаў, прызначаных для апісання стужак навін, анонсаў артыкулаў, змен у блогах і г. д. Інфармацыя з розных крыніц, прадстаўленая ў фармаце RSS, можа быць сабрана, апрацавана і прадстаўлена карыстальніку ў зручным для яго выглядзе адмысловымі праграмамі-агрэгатарамі.

У розных версіях абрэвіятура RSS мела розныя расшыфроўкі:

  • Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.9x) — узбагачаная зводка сайта;
  • RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 і 1.0) — зводка сайта з ужываннем інфраструктуры апісання рэсурсаў;
  • Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.x) — вельмі просты збор зборнай інфармацыі.

Выкарыстанне

Звычайна з дапамогай RSS 2.0 даецца кароткае апісанне новай інфармацыі, якая з'явілася на сайце, і спасылка на яе поўную версію. Інтэрнэт-рэсурс у фармаце RSS завецца RSS-каналам, RSS-стужкай ці RSS-фідам.

Шматлікія сучасныя браўзеры, паштовыя кліенты і інтэрнэт-пэйджары ўмеюць працаваць з RSS-стужкамі, сярод іх Safari, Maxthon, Miranda, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera, Opera Mini, Windows Internet Explorer (пачынаючы з 7-й версіі). Акрамя таго, існуюць спецыялізаваныя праграмы (RSS-агрэгатары), якія збіраюць і апрацоўчыя інфармацыю RSS-каналаў.
