Rafetus là một chi rùa mai mềm[cần dẫn nguồn] có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng cao trong phân họ Trionychinae, họ Ba ba (Trionychidae). Chi này hiện bao gồm 2 hoặc 3 loài (sự tách biệt của loài thứ 3 hiện đang tranh cãi, xem rùa Hồ Gươm#Tranh luận về số lượng cá thể và phân loài).

Đặc điểm sinh học

Mô tả

Cả hai loài của chi đều có kích thước mai khá lớn, chiều dài có thể đạt tới 80 cm hoặc hơn.

Sinh thái

Rafetus sinh sống ở môi trường nước ngọt.

Phân loài

Hầu hết các hệ thống phân loại động vật trên thế giới đều công nhận 2 loài chính của chi là Rafetus euphraticus và Rafetus swinhoei. Tuy nhiên, một số nhà khoa học gần đây đưa ra đề xuất với 2 tên khoa học cho 1 loài mới là Rafetus vietnamensis[2] và Rafetus leloii.[3]

  • Rafetus euphraticus: Được tổ chức Liên minh Bảo tồn Thiên nhiên Quốc tế IUCN xếp vào thể loại loài nguy cấp.[5]
  • Rafetus swinhoei (còn được Gray gọi là Oscaria swinhoei), dù có được xác định là bao gồm cả R. vietnamensis/R. leloii hay không, đều thuộc vào thể loại loài cực kỳ nguy cấp do số lượng cá thể còn tồn tại quá ít và nguy cơ tuyệt chủng cao, khả năng nhân và phát triển giống thấp.[6]
