Heterotrigona là một chi ong không ngòi thuộc tông Meliponini, họ Apidae, phân bố tại Đông Nam Á và các khu vực lân cận.[1][2][3]
Chi này được mô tả bởi Schwarz vào năm 1939. Các loài trong chi có kích thước nhỏ đến trung bình, có đặc điểm hình thái gần với chi Homotrigona, nhưng thường nhỏ hơn và có hàm (mandible) kém phát triển hơn.[4]
Các loài Heterotrigona phân bố chủ yếu ở Nam Á và Đông Nam Á, bao gồm Malaysia, Thái Lan, Indonesia, Singapore, Borneo và Philippines, và kéo dài đến Papua New Guinea.[1] Đây là các loài ong xã hội cao (eusocial), làm tổ trong hốc cây hoặc các cấu trúc nhân tạo, và được sử dụng rộng rãi trong nuôi ong không ngòi để sản xuất mật ong, keo ong và làm tác nhân thụ phấn nông nghiệp.[5]
Loài nổi bật và có giá trị kinh tế cao nhất là Heterotrigona itama (Cockerell, 1918), có màu chủ yếu là đen và được nuôi phổ biến trong các hệ thống nuôi ong thương mại tại Đông Nam Á.[5]
