Gresèls es format de gres, « terrenh peirós, gravenós », d'origina prelatina (Dauzat) o germanica (Basalgas), e del sufixe -èl (del latin -ellum) [5],[6]. Lo vilatge èra pas dins la ribièra coma es ara, mas just en bas del castèl, qu'es sul travèrs, çò que justifica plan lo nom.
Xavier Delamarre explica Gresèls per una etimologia celtica griselā o griselon [7].
