Balon [1] (Ballons en francés) es una comuna occitana de Daufinat situaa dins lo departament de Droma e la region d'Auvèrnhe-Ròse-Aups, ancianament de Ròse-Aups.
Geografia
Toponimia
Las fòrmas ancianas son Balaion, en 1277, de Ballonis Lotron en 1337. Balon vendriá d'un tèma gallic *balat-, benlèu present dins lo nom de la divessa Belatos, amb un sufixe -onnum (sic, latinizacion) [2]. Xavier Delamarre confirma, en gròs, l'explicacion : Balon derivariá d'un balatonon, « la proprietat de Balato(nos) », benlèu vengut d'un teonime (nom de dieu) *Balatos (deus). Lo nom es identic a Ballon (Sarthe), Ballon (Ain), Ballon (Charanta Maritima); un dieu Mars Beladō es atestat, mas lo vocalisme de la sillaba iniciala de las fòrmas ancianas daus toponimes es sempre en -a [3]
