James Edward Humphreys (født 10. desember 1939 i Erie i Pennsylvania i USA; død 27. august 2020 i Leeds i Massachusetts)^[6][7] var en amerikansk matematiker som beskjeftiget seg med algebraiske grupper, Lie-grupper og Lie-algebra og deres representajonsteori.

Humphreysgikk til skole i Erie i Pennsylvania og studerte ved Oberlin College (Bachelor 1961) og fra 1961 filosofi og matematikk ved Cornell University. I 1964 tok han mastergrad ved Yale University, og der ble han i 1966 under George B. Seligman doktor (Algebraic Lie Algebras over fields of prime characteristic). Han ble først Assistant Professor ved University of Oregon og 1970 Associate Professor ved New York University. I 1974 ble han Associate Professor og i 1976 professor ved University of Massachusetts. Han gikk i pensjon i 2003. I 1968/68 og 1977 var han ved Institute for Advanced Study, 1969/70 ved Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University og 1985 gjesteprofessor ved Rutgers University. Han er kjent for sine lærebøker særlig om Lie-algebra og dens representasjonsteori.

I 1976 mottok han Lester Randolph Ford Award.^[8]

Han døde i august 2020 i an alder av 80 år av covid-19.^[7]
