Tiol
Tiol ialah suatu sebatian organosulfur dengan formula kimia R-SH, di mana R ialah kumpulan alkil ataupun sebarang bentuk kumpulan organik. Tiol secara asasnya sama bentuk dengan alkohol dengan atom oksigen digantikan dengan atom sulfur. Kumpulan berfungsi –SH boleh dipanggil sebagai kumpulan tiol atau sulfhidril.
Tiol juga dipanggil sebagai merkaptan, daripada frasa bahasa Latin, mercurium captāns, "menangkap merkuri" kerana kumpulan tiolat, RS- boleh menghasilkan ikatan yang kuat dengan atom merkuri.[1][2]
Kebanyakan tiol dikatakan memiliki bau yang kuat yang dikatakan serupa dengan bau bawang putih.
