Mars

Rencana ini mengenai suatu dewa disembah masyarakat Romawi. Untuk planet yang turut dinamakan sedemikian oleh sesetengah negara Nusantara, sila lihat Marikh.

Mars (Latin: Mārs) ialah dewa perang dan penjaga hasil tanaman menurut kepercayaan tamadun Rom purba.[1] Dewa ini dewa kedua penting dipuja selepas Jupiter, terutamanya dalam kalangan tentera Rom. Malah, dewa ini dianggap pelindung kota Roma dan dianggap sebagai leluhur dari semua orang Romawi.

Nama Mars kemungkinan beasal dari dewa pertanian mitologi Etruska, Maris.

Masyarakat Romawi pada awalnya disembah sebagai suatu dewa pertanian dan pelindung ternakan, ladang, dan petani - hal ini disebabkan kerana penglibatan mereka dalam pekerjaan mereka sendiri awalnya adalah petani. Ketika Romawi semakin lama semakin kuat dalam peperangan, Mars beralih fungsi dan disembah sebagai dewa pertempuran dan dihubungkan dengan Ares dari mitologi Yunani.
