Bossa nova dikenali secara meluas sebagai gaya muzik Brazil yang diketengahkan pada tahun 1950-an dan 1960-an. Frasa bossa nova secara tersuratnya bermaksud "trend baharu" (sebutan dalam bahasa Portugis: [ˈbɔsɐ ˈnɔvɐ] (
listen)). Cantuman lirik samba dan jaz telah menjadi komponen utama dalam bossa nova. Pada tahun 1960-an, pengikut genre ini adalah daripada golongan pemuzik muda dan pelajar kolej.[2] Semenjak kewujudannya, bossa nova kekal sebagai perkara penting dalam himpunan standard jaz.
