Barat

Ros kompas

Barat atau maghrib[1] ialah arah dalam bidang geografi. Ia merupakan salah satu daripada empat arah kardinal atau mata angin (titik kardinal kompas) yang bertentangan dengan timur dan bersudut tegak dengan utara dan selatan. Barat biasanya berada di bahagian sebelah kiri peta. Matahari dan Bulan tenggelam di sebelah barat. Barat berlawanan arah dengan Timur.

Peristilahan

"Barat" turunan kata akar bahasa Proto-Austronesia *SabaRat bererti angin tiupan dari arah menghadap lautan besar diungkapkan leluhur Austronesia di pulau Taiwan.[2]

"Maghrib" serapan Arab: مَغْرِب‎, rumi: maghrib "tempat matahari terbenam" terbitan kata kerja غَرَبَ‎‎‎ gharaba "terbenam".[3]
