Atafu

Atafu adalah nama salah satu atol terkecil dari tiga atol yang terdapat di Tokelau [1], wilayah tanggungan di New Zealand, dan berjarak sekurang-kurangnya 650 kilometer ke barat Samoa.

Atol Atafu terdiri daripada 42 pulau kecil yang terletak dalam koordinat 8°33′6″S 172°30′3″B / 8.55167°S 172.50083°B / -8.55167; -172.50083 (Atafu).[1][2] Atafu memiliki luas tanah seluas 220 hektar, dalam bentuk cincin yang mengelilingi laguna di dalamnya. Kawasan tertinggi di atol atafu mempunyai ketinggian kira-kira 5 meter dari permukaan laut.[1] Atol ini mempunyai populasi tetap sebanyak 541 orang pada tahun 2016.[3]

Atafu adalah nama kuno yang diberikan oleh penduduk awal atol ini. Orang Eropah pertama kali menemui atol ini pada 24 Jun 1765, ketika Jonh Byron, penjelajah dari England dengan kapalnya Dolphin, menamakan atol ini sebagai "Pulau Duke York". Pada masa itu, John Byron tidak menemui penduduk yang mendiami atol ini. [4][5]
