Location of Adelaide within Australia

Adelaide ialah ibu negeri Australia Selatan dan bandar ke-5 terbesar di Australia dengan penduduk lebih 1.1 juta. Bandar Adelaide terletak kira-kira 20 km dari tepi pantai Teluk St Vincent. Di utara Semenanjung Fleurieu dan Dataran Adelaide. Pergunungan Lofty Ranges terletak kira-kira 20 km dari sini. Pantai yang terkenal ialah pantai Sellicks.

Nama Adelaide ini berasal dari nama Ratu Adelaide yang lahir di Jerman, isteri Raja William IV . Bandar ini diasaskan pada 1836 dan dirancang menjadi ibu negeri wilayah British di Australia. Kolonel William Light merupakan pengasas bandar Adelaide , telah merancang ciri-ciri bandar ini berdekatan dengan Sungai Torrens. Ketika itu pribumi asalnya ialah puak Kaurna.
