La tembaoj estas okcidentafrika etno, kiu konsistigis la ĉefan loĝantarogrupon en la iama reĝlando Kotokoli. La tembaoj difinas sin precipe per lingvistika fono, ĉar la nocio "tembaoj" striktasence signifas nur "parolanto de la lingvo tem". Sed etnologie rigardite la parolantaro de la tembaa lingvo estas tre heterogena etnokomplekso.
La tembaa lingvo, kies parolantoj mem nomas ĝin tem, apartenas al la grupo de la gur-lingvoj en la familio de la niĝer-kongo-lingvoj. Hodiaŭ oni taksas, ke entute 307.100 homoj parolas la tembaan lingvon, el kiuj 204.100 (1991) vivas en Togolando, proksimume 50.000 (2001) sur la teritorio de la respubliko Benino kaj proksimume 53.000 sur la teritorio de la hodiaŭa Ganao.
