Subfosilio estas restoj kies procezo de fosiliiĝo ne estas kompleta, ĉu pro manko de tempo ĉu pro la kondiĉoj laŭ kiuj ili estis enterigataj ne estis plej bonaj por fosiliigo.

Subfosiliaj restoj kiuj datas el Mezozoiko estas escepte raraj, kutime en granda stato de malboniĝo kaj sekve tre disputataj. La plej kerno de tiu materialo devenas el kuŝejoj de Kvaternaro.
