Project goals

WikiProject India aims to build and maintain a comprehensive, accurate, neutral, and well-sourced collection of articles covering all aspects of India, its history, geography, culture, society, politics, economy, science, and people.

To support these goals, the project has developed a number of collaborative features that help editors organize and coordinate their work. These include:

  • Departments, which manage project-wide activities such as article assessment, peer review, maintenance, and collaboration.
  • Work Groups, which focus on specific areas of interest, including cities, states, history, politics, culture, religion, sports, and other India-related topics.

Participation

The project's primary discussion forum is Wikipedia:Noticeboard for India-related topics, where editors can ask questions, seek consensus, request assistance, and discuss issues related to India-related articles. Departments

Departments are specialized teams within WikiProject India that help coordinate and manage different aspects of the project's work.

Members of these departments carry out a variety of tasks, including creating and improving articles, maintaining project pages, managing portals, participating in article reviews and assessments, organizing collaborative efforts, and supporting the overall operation of the project.

The following departments focus on specific areas of project maintenance and coordination. However, participation is flexible—members are not limited to departmental work and are encouraged to contribute wherever their interests and expertise are most useful.

In addition to departmental activities, editors can also contribute through the project's Work Groups, which focus on improving articles within particular subject areas related to India.

  • The List of basic India topics remains a work in progress and welcomes contributions from editors interested in improving the accessibility and organization of India-related content on Wikipedia.

Guide

The Guide provides a collection of tools, resources, scripts, and recommendations that can help editors create, improve, and maintain India-related articles. It serves as a useful starting point for both new and experienced contributors working within WikiProject India.

Assessment

The Assessment Department evaluates the quality and importance of India-related articles on Wikipedia.

Article assessments help editors:

  • Identify articles that need improvement.
  • Track the progress of articles over time.
  • Recognize high-quality contributions.
  • Prioritize work on important topics that require further development.

Most assessments are carried out in coordination with the WP:1.0 program and are recorded through parameters in the {{WikiProject India}} project banner. These ratings automatically place articles into maintenance and tracking categories, which are used to generate worklists and statistics for the project.

By maintaining accurate assessments, the department helps editors focus their efforts where they are most needed and supports the ongoing improvement of Wikipedia's coverage of India.

Peer review

The Peer Review Department provides feedback on India-related articles submitted by editors. Peer reviews help identify areas for improvement, including sourcing, structure, neutrality, style, and overall article quality.

Photography

Cartography

Requests

The Requested Articles Department helps organize and track articles that are needed but have not yet been created. The department also assists in improving newly created articles, categorizing them appropriately, and ensuring they are tagged with relevant WikiProject banners.

Contributors are encouraged to create articles from the request list and help expand coverage of important India-related topics.

Kitchen

The Kitchen of WikiProject India hosts a collection of India-themed and cuisine-themed personal user awards. These awards can be used to recognize and thank editors for their contributions to India-related topics and WikiProject activities.

Indic scripts in lead

According to the Manual of Style for India-related articles, Indic scripts should generally not be included in article lead sections or infoboxes. Instead, editors should use International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) pronunciation guides, which are accessible to a wider international audience.

Exceptions include:

  • Articles about a script itself.
  • Articles about a language that uses the script.
  • Articles about texts that were originally written in that script.

This guideline generally applies only to articles that fall primarily within the scope of WikiProject India.
