Welcome to WikiProject India

WikiProject India is a collaborative group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of India and all India-related topics.

Whether your interests include history, geography, politics, culture, religion, science, sports, languages, or current events, you are welcome to participate.

What we do

WikiProject India works to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India and India-related topics. Editors in the project collaborate to:

  • Create new articles on notable people, places, events, organizations, and other topics related to India.
  • Expand existing articles by adding well-sourced information, improving structure, and updating outdated content.
  • Fix issues such as missing citations, formatting problems, broken links, and incomplete sections.
  • Assess article quality and help articles progress toward higher standards.
  • Maintain consistency across India-related articles by following Wikipedia's policies, guidelines, and style recommendations.
  • Discuss content questions, coordinate improvement efforts, and support editors working on India-related subjects.

How you can help

There are many ways to contribute, whether you are a new editor or an experienced Wikipedian:

  • Improve articles that need additional sources, expansion, fact-checking, or general cleanup.
  • Create new articles on notable India-related topics that are currently missing from Wikipedia.
  • Add reliable references, images, infoboxes, and useful internal links to existing articles.
  • Review and assess articles to help determine their quality and importance within the project.
  • Participate in project discussions, task forces, and collaborative improvement efforts.
  • Help maintain consistency across India-related articles by following Wikipedia's policies, guidelines, and style recommendations.
  • Assist with updating outdated information and monitoring articles for errors, vandalism, or unsourced content.

No matter your level of experience, every constructive contribution helps improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

Project goals

WikiProject India aims to build and maintain a comprehensive, accurate, neutral, and well-sourced collection of articles covering all aspects of India, its history, geography, culture, society, politics, economy, science, and people.

To support these goals, the project has developed a number of collaborative features that help editors organize and coordinate their work. These include:

  • Departments, which manage project-wide activities such as article assessment, peer review, maintenance, and collaboration.
  • Work Groups, which focus on specific areas of interest, including cities, states, history, politics, culture, religion, sports, and other India-related topics.

Together, these groups help editors identify priorities, share expertise, and improve the quality of India-related content across Wikipedia.

Participation

Anyone interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of India is welcome to join the project.

A list of current participants can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Members. To join, simply add your name to the members list and start contributing to project discussions and tasks.

The project's primary discussion forum is Wikipedia:Noticeboard for India-related topics, where editors can ask questions, seek consensus, request assistance, and discuss issues related to India-related articles. You may wish to add the noticeboard to your watchlist to stay informed about ongoing discussions and project activities.

Departments

Departments are specialized teams within WikiProject India that help coordinate and manage different aspects of the project's work.

Members of these departments carry out a variety of tasks, including creating and improving articles, maintaining project pages, managing portals, participating in article reviews and assessments, organizing collaborative efforts, and supporting the overall operation of the project.

The following departments focus on specific areas of project maintenance and coordination. However, participation is flexible—members are not limited to departmental work and are encouraged to contribute wherever their interests and expertise are most useful.

In addition to departmental activities, editors can also contribute through the project's Work Groups, which focus on improving articles within particular subject areas related to India.

Coverage

  • Refine and maintain the List of basic India topics, one of Wikipedia's primary guides to India-related content. This page serves as a topic outline and navigation hub, helping readers explore the major subjects associated with India and understand how they are connected.
  • The list provides an overview of India's geography, history, culture, politics, economy, society, and other key areas, making it easier for readers to find information and navigate related articles.
  • Improving this page helps strengthen Wikipedia's overall coverage of India. Contributors can assist by expanding missing sections, updating links, improving organization, adding images, and ensuring that important topics are represented accurately.
  • The List of basic India topics remains a work in progress and welcomes contributions from editors interested in improving the accessibility and organization of India-related content on Wikipedia.

Guide

The Guide provides a collection of tools, resources, scripts, and recommendations that can help editors create, improve, and maintain India-related articles. It serves as a useful starting point for both new and experienced contributors working within WikiProject India.

Assessment

The Assessment Department evaluates the quality and importance of India-related articles on Wikipedia.

Article assessments help editors:

  • Identify articles that need improvement.
  • Track the progress of articles over time.
  • Recognize high-quality contributions.
  • Prioritize work on important topics that require further development.

Most assessments are carried out in coordination with the WP:1.0 program and are recorded through parameters in the {{WikiProject India}} project banner. These ratings automatically place articles into maintenance and tracking categories, which are used to generate worklists and statistics for the project.

By maintaining accurate assessments, the department helps editors focus their efforts where they are most needed and supports the ongoing improvement of Wikipedia's coverage of India.

Peer review

The Peer Review Department provides feedback on India-related articles submitted by editors. Peer reviews help identify areas for improvement, including sourcing, structure, neutrality, style, and overall article quality.

Project members are encouraged to request reviews for articles they are working on or nominate articles that would benefit from additional input from other contributors.

Photography

The Photography Department works to improve the visual quality of India-related articles by collecting, organizing, and promoting the use of high-quality photographs and images. Contributors can help by uploading freely licensed images, adding photographs to articles, and identifying topics that require better visual coverage.

Cartography

The Cartography Department develops and maintains maps for use in India-related articles. The department collects existing public-domain and free-license maps, improves existing maps, and creates new ones when suitable alternatives are unavailable.

Editors are welcome to request maps that may help improve specific articles or subject areas.

Requests

The Requested Articles Department helps organize and track articles that are needed but have not yet been created. The department also assists in improving newly created articles, categorizing them appropriately, and ensuring they are tagged with relevant WikiProject banners.

Contributors are encouraged to create articles from the request list and help expand coverage of important India-related topics.

Kitchen

The Kitchen of WikiProject India hosts a collection of India-themed and cuisine-themed personal user awards. These awards can be used to recognize and thank editors for their contributions to India-related topics and WikiProject activities.

Project guidelines

Manual of Style

Indic scripts in lead

According to the Manual of Style for India-related articles, Indic scripts should generally not be included in article lead sections or infoboxes. Instead, editors should use International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) pronunciation guides, which are accessible to a wider international audience.

Exceptions include:

  • Articles about a script itself.
  • Articles about a language that uses the script.
  • Articles about texts that were originally written in that script.

This guideline generally applies only to articles that fall primarily within the scope of WikiProject India.

Project organisation

WikiProject India is organized into a number of departments and work groups that focus on different aspects of article improvement, assessment, maintenance, and collaboration.

For an overview of the project's structure and its various work groups, see Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Workgroups.

Project banner

Place the {{WikiProject India}} banner at the top of an article's talk page to indicate that the article falls within the scope of WikiProject India.

The banner helps editors assess article quality and importance, organize maintenance work, and coordinate improvement efforts across India-related topics.

For detailed instructions, available parameters, and usage guidelines, see Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Project banner.
