Wikipedia:Requested templates

Add new requests for a new template or updates to existing templates to the bottom of this page. Please be clear about what the template is used for, roughly what it should look like, and which articles it should link to, if any.

For requests regarding stub templates, go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals.

A general description and guideline for userboxes can be found at Wikipedia:Userboxes. A detailed instruction to use the userbox template can be found at Template:Userbox. For requests regarding userboxes, go to Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/Ideas.

Template for excessive details

Change GA nomination and GANentry templates to show certain errors

See this discussion. I would like to change two templates: {{GA nominee}}, and {{GANentry}}, to show errors under certain conditions.

The GA nominee template currently shows "Please use the |page= parameter to specify the number of the next free GAN review page, or use {{subst:GAN}} instead to find the next free page automatically." if there is no page parameter included. It also shows " This article is not categorized by subtopic. Please edit the |subtopic= parameter on this talk page to include one. For a list of subtopics, please see Wikipedia:Good article nominations." if there is no subtopic parameter. I'd like to add an error for a missing or invalid status parameter, saying "This template must include a status parameter" if it's missing, or "status must be one of the following: blank, onreview, on review, hold, on hold, onhold, 2nd opinion, or 2ndopinion" if it's not valid. I would like all these errors to be red and bold.

I would like to add a new parameter, error, to the GANentry template. It should function as follows:

This wikitext: {{GANentry|1=Example|2=1|shortdesc=|error=This is a test error message}}

should produce the output it normally produces followed by an error message, like so:

Example (talk | history | start review) This is a test error message

Update: the GANentry modification is done. I will have a go at the GA nomination one at some point if nobody else gets to it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 19:44, 21 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
This has now been done. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 10:30, 11 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Template aside

Template:Aside probably needs a bit of love (its sole contributor likely left the project seven years ago).

Specifically:

1. Use as a wrapper: If and when T104770 is resolved, I feel this template would best serve the community if its use as a wrapper still rendered as it currently renders, that is, with encasing the parameter text within visible <aside></aside> tags.

2. Use as a page summary: Check the template's function as a page summary for errors. I tried replicating the listed example but could not get the template to display the text on my test page for this purpose: User talk:CapnZapp/asides/botunits. Do note I am not sure there are any bugs in the template code, it could well be that the documentation needs to better enumerate any limitations and/or prerequisites.

I might try to make it look better?? Welovecontributors! [talk] 11:14, 27 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
done a redesign for now. Welovecontributors! [talk] 11:29, 27 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Activist / protest groups and movements

Is there enough potential for a template (or portal) for current and maybe past protest groups such as the People's Music Network, Indivisible, Free DC, 50501, DC Activist Street Band, Rapid Response Choir, Singing Resistance, DC Labor Chorus, and similar groups around the country? Should it be a template or a portal? Kevin Cole (talk) 16:20, 30 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You can check out existing templates with "Protest" in the name, e.g. Template:Protests against Trump. —andrybak (talk) 18:35, 30 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

This template indicates that the article contains non-free media that can be replaced with reasonable freely licensed alternatives. For example, the current Auto-Tune article features samples of copyrighted music to illustrate the effect, while one could apply the effect to their own voice recording and release both the original and edited recordings under a free license. Another example is Computer wargame, which features a non-free screenshot despite there likely existing free and open source games.

The template should ideally use the image where the copyright symbol is replaced by the CC symbol or there is an arrow from former to latter. Example:

Template layout:

{{Free alternative|[media type]|[comments]}}

Media types: All [default], Image, Illustration, Photo, Audio, Video (you can add more if you want)

Examples:

  • {{Free alternative}}

This article features non-free media that could be replaced with reasonable freely licensed alternatives. Please consider finding similar media under a free license or creating it yourself. If possible, upload the result to Wikimedia Commons.

  • {{Free alternative|Audio}}

This article features non-free audio files that could be replaced with reasonable freely licensed alternatives. Please consider finding similar media under a free license or creating it yourself. If possible, upload the result to Wikimedia Commons.

  • {{Free alternative|Image|The imageboard's source code is under GPL, though user images should be blurred.}}

  • {{Free alternative|Photo|The statue can be photographed without copyright concerns due to the [[C:COM:FOP Canada|freedom of panorama law in Canada]].}}

Search template request

I have designed a template that contains a number of search engines all in one place. Can someone please make this an active template that I can put on article talk pages. You can see this template draft in my sandbox User:Barbara (WVS)/sandbox. It is the first item in my sandbox. Thank you very much. Best Regards, Barbara 20:32, 6 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Critical Warning

A red notice that uses as the image on the left. It is for when using {{Warning}} or {{Caution}} does not emphasize the severity of the notice enough. | One Reaction was here. Got a complaint? 21:22, 11 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

See if Warning ({{Warning sign}}) is good enough. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 16:32, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
yeah, I don't feel like {{Warning sign}} is enough. and it's not really a notice, in the sense that I was imagining it being a notice like {{Notice}} is. | One Reaction was here. Got a complaint? 18:55, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
There are a lot of notices that use the red hand image in Wikipedia:Template index/User talk namespace/Multi-level templates. If one of those isn't applicable then you can probably adapt one of them into a new template. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 04:59, 13 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
i'm talking about one like the default {{Notice}}, NOT one of those! | One Reaction was here. Got a complaint? 20:28, 13 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
