The basic cartography workshop gives participants an overview of GIS concepts, mapping and hands on knowledge in using free and open source digitalcartography tools. You will also learn the basics of free licenses, uploading files to Wikipedia and editing articles.

If you want to work with geospatial data and don't know where to start, this workshop is for you.

Prerequisites

Participants

  • Participants need not have any technical/coding skills, but knowledge using command line and foss is a plus
  • Registered and activated user account on Wikimedia Commons and OpenStreetMap
  • Bring any gps enable devices to explore if available
  • Laptop if you have one
  • Play with the software mentioned in the resources

Venue

  • Linux/Mac systems with working internet connection. Support for all the software on Windows is not guaranteed.
  • Projector
  • Access to a B/W A4 printer
  • Whiteboard/Blackboard to write stuff and plan
  • Sufficient charging points for laptops
  • Number of participants limited to 20. More participants will lead to lower personal attention and learning.

Outline

Task: Make a map of the college campus and add it to wikipedia. The workshop is divided into three parts:

Introduction to open source digital cartography and the openstreetmap (OSM) project - 1 hour

  • 10 min: Introducing open source maps
  • 15 min: Components of the OSM project
  • 10 min: Live demo: Editing OSM data using the online editor
  • 10 min: Live demo: Custom cartography using tilemill
  • 15 min: Q&A

Basic GIS workshop - 4 hours

  • 30 min presentation on gis concepts and OSM model
  • 1:30 hours of field mapping (includes snack time and break)
  • 2 hours editing and uploading to OSM project (requires all participants to have a system with working internet)

Geovisualization and cartography workshop - 4 hours

  • 30 min presentation on OSM,open source GIS tools and open data
  • 30 min extracting and processing data from OSM, rendering tools: Maperitive, Tilemill, QuantumGIS
  • 2:30 hours stylizing and rendering map data
  • 30 min uploading wikimedia commons, adding to wikipedia
