- clayton book
- [3] German Islamic book. Potential, but PRIMARY concerns...
- Trethewey, Ken. "Ancient Lighthouses - Part 5: The Pharos" (PDF). Pharology. seems Self Published????
Sources NOT to use
- Claire, Thomas C. Pharos – A Lighthouse For Alexandria. (appears to be self-published)
- Maher, Jimmy. The Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria (A Wonders of the World Book. (somehow appears to be more self-published)
Evaluation of current sources in the article
Based on this version. Wil evaluate to see if they are good for FAC:
- [1/12] (McKenzie, Judith (2011). The Architecture of Alexandria and Egypt: 300 BC – AD 700) – Good for FAC
- [2/3] (Clayton, Peter A. (2013). "Chapter 7: The Pharos at Alexandria". The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) – Seems good, will need to see the book for further info
- [4] ("Treasures of the Sunken City". Nova) – Good, but not FAC material (would need to find scholarly sources on ts)
- [5] ("Sunken Ruins of Alexandria Will Be World's First Underwater Museum". Earthables) – Not good, need better source
- [6] (Radley, Dario (July 7, 2025). "Lighthouse of Alexandria rises again as 22 massive blocks resurface from the seafloor after 2,000 years") – Okayish??? Could prolly replace it w/ NYT/academic news sources tho
- [7] (Smith, Sir William (1952). Everyman's Smaller Classical Dictionary.) – Would need to replace it w/ better source, tho this depends on whether the Origin section remains
- [8] (Haag, Michael (2008). Vintage Alexandria: Photographs of the City, 1860–1960) – Would probably be removed in the end
- [9] (quote comes from this website) – Website seems to be a tertiary source, made by some random guy but hosted on UChicago? Not good, but has some good info and could prolly steal its sources
- [10] (Cartwright, Mark. "Lighthouse of Alexandria". World History Encyclopedia.) – Tertiary source, but more reliable. Could steal its sources (cites good stuff)
- [11] (Tomlinson, Richard Allan (1992). From Mycenae to Constantinople: the evolution of the ancient city.) – Good, but would there be better sources? (probably)
- [13] (Lucian) – Find a secondary source instead of Greco-Roman stuff
- [14] ("Characterization and Source of Sedimentary Rocks of the Alexandria Lighthouse Archaeological Objects, Egypt". ResearchGate.) – Seems good, just find the original source
- [15] ("lighthouse of Alexandria: History, Location, & Facts". Encyclopedia Britannica) – Tertiary source, but could be usable?
- [16] (Paul Jordan (2014). Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Routledge.) – Seems good I guess.
- [17] (Behrens-Abouseif, Doris (January 1, 2006). "The Islamic History of the Lighthouse of Alexandria") – Good, but more recent scholarship needed?
- [18] (Haas 1997) – Seems good, but more recent scholarship needed?
- [19/30] (Clayton & Price 1988, p. 153.) – Seems good, but more recent scholarship needed?
- [20/21] (Abdelnaby, Adel E.; Elnashai, Amr S. (October 2013). "Integrity assessment of the Pharos of Alexandria during the 1303 CE earthquake".) – Seems good
- [22] (Eickhoff 1966, p. 40.) – Old source, see if better source exists
- [23] (this website) – seems RS, but need scholarly source
- [24] (this paper) origin seems okay, but it cites Wikipedia from 2008.... need better source
- [25] (Frost, H. (2000). From Byblos to Pharos: some archaeological considerations. In N. Grimal, M. H. Mostafa, & D. Nakashima (Authors), Underwater archaeology and coastal management: Focus on Alexandria) – Seems okay? See if more recent sources exist
- [26] (Lawler, Andrew. "Raising Alexandria". Smithsonian.) – RS, could be acceptable for FAC (but see if formal sources exist)
- [27] (Franck Goddio's Excavations in Alexandria) – Seems RS, but primary/non-indepdent source
- [28] (Boukhari, Sophie (February 1997). "Swimming With Sphinxes". UNESCO) – Dunno if RS, but find recent scholarly works
- [29] ("Museums and Tourism – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization". unesco.org.) – Primary source/non-independent. Needs to be updated
- [31] (Amro Ali (July 7, 2015). "A frightening vision: on plans to rebuild the Alexandria Lighthouse") – Seems like an advocacy group, so use it carefully. Seems RS I guess (but find scholalry sources)
- [32] (Petersen, Andrew (1996). Dictionary of Islamic Architecture. Routledge) – Seems okay, but could use recent source
- [33] (Ferris, Gary W. Presidential Places: A Guide to the Historic Sites of U.S. Presidents. Winston-Salem, N.C.: J.F. Blair, 1999) –Seems Okayish? most likely find better source
- [34] (It was common for Caesar in his writings to refer to himself in the third person.) – uncited...
- [35] (Needham, Joseph (1986). Science and Civilization in China: Volume 5, Physics and Physical Technology, Part 3: Civil Engineering and Nautics) – Seems okay, but need more current source
- [36] (Battutah, Ibn (2002). The Travels of Ibn Battutah.) – Non-primary RS source needed
- [37] (Barclay, John M. G. (1998). Jews in the Mediterranean Diaspora: from Alexander to Trajan (323 BCE–117 CE)) seems okayish, but more recent work is appreciated
- [38] ("Planetary Names: Crater, craters: Pharos on Proteus". Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. USGS Astrogeology) could use scholarly source
Overall, some okayish sources, some sources that are RS but not high-quality for FAC, and some less-than-satisfactory sources. WP:AGEMATTERS is a consideration here due to the archaeological finds of the lighthouse.

Chapter 4: “Fantasies of the Pharos”
- LOA collapse caused a bunch of artistic fantasies/reconstructions, largely improbable and fictional towers... but they are influential
- Some features in reconstruction actually have their origins within those reconstrutctions... recreations are exotic, very grand
- Second half of 16the cneutry reniassance: Pirro Ligorio was passionate about ancient architecture and popuarised classical Roman antiquity... publlished delle antichita di roma 1553, book on magnicient structure. (p. 98)
- Included LOA, based its reconstruction off of Roman coins... drew a drachm and hemidrachm in the manuscript
- Later added a pillared lantern and cupola in lieu of summit statue, possibly one of the very earliest instances of popular misconception that flames of pharos where within caging rings of columns. Also was not aware that middle floor is octagonal
- Also depicted Ichthyocentaur (centuar fishes) instead of Tritons, put them on third and first stage corners... metamophrsised them (ok, bro)... but this tower is one of the more realistic ones (p. 99)
- Middle of 16th century: Maarten van Heemskerck made 7wonders paintings. Some say that this version was important for the modern version of 7ancient wonders, but Hemmskerck added Colosseum as concession to Martial addition of Flavian Amphithtre.
- His works were turned into engravings, so main raoute for fictional images to be spread and popularised during his time. One of those was Philip Galle in 1572 who engraved 7wonders... makes it possibly the most ifnluential engraving of the 16th century
- I mean he kinda copied rhodes colossus pose so.... (p. 101)
- LOA depiction is described to be a "nipple" like
- Galle is unaware that LOA island rises barely furhter than 10m above sea level
- Following description: "Cursibus extruxti ratium Ptolemaee regundis nocturnis Pharon, ut quum nox tenebrosa sileret, clara vicem in Phaebes vomerent funalia lucem, infida ut Nili sic tutius ora subirent." (Constructed to guide the courses of Ptolemy’s ships by night, whenever the obscuring darkness brought them to rest, the Pharos shone forth, alternatively spewing fumes by day from torches in order thus to make the treacherous Nile coast safer.) (p. 102)
- All of the entires in the list derive from list called in miracula orbis octo (pertaining to the 8wonders of the world published by Hadrianus Junius in 1598 called poematum hadriani junni hornani medici, iber primus... provided historical basis for engraving series and descpriton for each engravings (p. 103)
- Junius probbaly based the list on some ancient source lost to time... list reflects elements of Pihlo, Antipater of Sidon, Martial, and Greg of tours, but did not match any of them... so aninet missing link
- Maybe it's his own list? Unlikely.. atypical of renisaance classicist. a bit weird he refered to colosseum as "amphithertem" bc colosseum orignated from 6th century... maybe mirroring martial or lost manscruipt of Flavian era? (p. 104)
- Antonio Tempesta drew another set in 1610.. but loa model was based on Heemskerck model... someone compiled a list of LOA images
- In 2010: author purchased German plan of ancient alexandria (1710), but maybe earlier date... ships and arhcitecture look late medieval, little sign of priviness to Braun and Hogenberg in 1575... maybe its a copy of description by Strabo (see with its features) (p. 105)
