Template talk:Numismatics

Heading text

What makes the USA so special that only American coins are used on the numismatics template?

Mention Portal

To bad n;erugnzbde link to the Portal:Numismatics isn't inside the box. Jidanni (talk) 23:48, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. How's that look? Joe I 06:35, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The template links to category pages when there are good articles on the same topic. For example Category:Circulating_currencies instead of List of currencies, or Category:Coins_of_ancient_Greece instead of Ancient Greek coinage. Perhaps it would improve navigation to go to articles? @Esnible:checkY Done. There is still many category list left, but I'm unsure what to replace them with.Jonpatterns (talk) 11:42, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Numismatics and Electronic money

I'm looking for an Info box (edit: Nav box really) listing the different types of currencies including Electronic money. But does Numismatics, the study of Notes and Coins, really cover these new Digital currencies? Does Numismatics even cover currency - the flow of money, rather than the physical objects used as money. Jonpatterns (talk) 11:45, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonpatterns: I think what you're asking for is a navbox, which would be {{Cryptocurrencies}}. {{Infobox currency}} is used on articles like Bitcoin to display data about the subject, not list other subjects the way a navbox does. No, numismatics doesn't really cover electronic currency because it's not a physical object. Economics studies the flow of currency as a matter of trade but not the coin of the realm. Numismatics studies the physical object that is currency, but not barter. Coins, paper money, and other fiat currencies are elements of material culture. In all of human history until now, currency has been a physical object so it's hard to say if numismatics will ever include non-physical currency. @@Chris troutman: Thanks for the speedy reply. You are right it is a Navbox that i'm looking for. I hadn't seen the cryptocurrency box. We are currently debating about where Electronic money and Digital currency fit together (one or both are the parent subjects of Cryptocurrency).Jonpatterns (talk) 12:50, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a history major. In my field we have a saying: anything after AD 1700 isn't history, it's journalism. I think if you wait a hundred years we'll have a better idea of how electronic money and digital currency fit together.  ;) Good luck. Chris Troutman (talk) 13:12, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
true it is early days, hopefully Wikipedia will still be around in the year 2114.Jonpatterns (talk) 13:31, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
