Title used by Telugu castes
Naidu (also spelled as Nayudu , Naidoo ) is a Telugu title commonly used by various Telugu castes. 'Nayudu/Naidu' (నాయుడు) is a contraction of the Telugu word 'Nayakudu' (నాయకుడు) meaning leader, chief, headman. Naicker or Nayakar is the Tamil term for Naidu . [ 1] [ 2] Telugu castes such as the Kamma , Gavara ,[ 3] [ 4] Golla ,[ 5] [ 6] Turpu Kapu ,[ 7] Velama , Boya [ 8] Kapu /Balija [ 9] [ 10] [ 11] [ 12] among others use the title.
In Coastal Andhra and Tamil Nadu the term Naidu primarily refers the Kamma caste.[ 13] [ 14] [ 15]
