Ο NGC 5939 είναι σπειροειδής γαλαξίας στον αστερισμό Μικρή Άρκτο. Η ταχύτητά του σε σχέση με την κοσμική ακτινοβολία υποβάθρου είναι 6684 ± 4 km/s και κατά συνέπεια απέχει περίπου 322 εκατομμύρια έτη φωτός βάσει του νόμου του Χαμπλ.[1] Τον ανακάλυψε ο αστρονόμος Λιούις Α. Σουίφτ (Lewis A. Swift) στις 11 Ιουλίου 1883.[2]

Υπερκαινοφανείς

Έχουν παρατηρηθεί τρεις υπερκαινοφανείς στον NGC 5939:

  • Ο τύπου Ib SN 2004ax την 21η Μαρτίου 2004.[3][4]
  • Ο τύπου II-P SN 2019gss στις 30 Μαΐου 2019.[5]
  • Ο τύπου Ia SN 2023gps στις 23 Απριλίου 2023.[6]

Ομάδα γαλαξιών

Ο NGC 5939 ανήκει στην ομώνυμη μικρή ομάδα γαλαξιών, που αποτελείται επίσης από τους IC 1129 and UGC 9896.[7]
