Arthur Hyman

Arthur Hyman (geboren 10. April 1921 in Schwäbisch Hall; gestorben 8. Februar 2017 in New York City) war ein US-amerikanischer Philosoph und Judaist deutscher Herkunft.

Leben

Arthur Hyman war ein Sohn des Isac Hyman und der Rosa Weil. Seine Familie emigrierte 1936 vor der deutschen Judenverfolgung in die USA. Er besuchte das St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland und machte 1944 einen B.A. Hyman studierte an der Harvard University (M.A., 1947) und wurde 1953 bei Harry Austryn Wolfson promoviert. Er machte eine Rabbinerausbildung bei Saul Lieberman am Jewish Theological Seminary und wurde 1955 ordiniert. Er heiratete 1951 die aus Berlin geflohene Philosophin Ruth Link-Salinger (1926–1998), sie hatten drei Kinder. In zweiter Ehe war er ab dem Jahr 2000 mit Batya Kahane verheiratet.

Hyman unterrichtete bis 1955 am Jewish Theological Seminary, dann am Dropsie College (1955–1961) und an der Columbia University (1956–1991). Seine Hauptbeschäftigung war ab 1961 eine Philosophieprofessur an der Yeshiva University. Von 1992 bis 2008 war er dort Dekan der Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies, gefolgt von David Berger. Er veröffentlichte an der Yeshiva University die Zeitschrift Maimonidean Studies. Er gab eine kritische Ausgabe der hebräischen Übersetzung von Averroes De Substantia Orbis heraus mit einer eigenen Übersetzung des Textes aus dem Lateinischen und Hebräischen ins Englische.

Hyman erhielt einen Ehrendoktor des Jewish Theological Seminary (1987) und des Hebrew Union College (1994). Er fungierte als Präsident der Société Internationale pour l’Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale (1978–1980) sowie der American Academy for Jewish Research (1992–1996).
