SMTP - (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)[1] protokol koristi se za slanje e-mailova. SMTP brine o slanju e-mailova na neki drugi računar. E-mailovi poslani su na email (SMTP server) i od tuda do drugog ili drugih servera i konačno do njegovog cilja.

SMTP može prenostiti samo tekst. Ne može prenositi binarne podatke kao slike, zvuk ili filmove.

SMTP koristi MIME protokol da bi omogućio slanje binarnih podataka preko TCP/IP mreže. MIME protokol binarne podatke preoblikuje u tekst.

Broj SMTP porta je 25.
