Maputo je glavni i najveći grad Mozambika. Leži na obali Indijskog okeana; njegova luka u zaljevu Delagoa ubraja se među najbolje u južnoj Africi. Osnovan oko 1720. Razvoj grada ubrzan je izgradnjom željezničke pruge do Johannesburga i Pretorie.
Ima savremeno opremljenu luku s velikim robnim prometom. Razvijene su prehrambena, tekstilna i hemijska industrija; postoji i tvornica cigareta. Univerzitet je osnovan 1963. U blizini je aerodrom Gago Continho.
