Komori i Mayotte

Mayotte je francuski prekomorski kolektiv[1] (francuski: Collectivité d'outre-mer). Nalazi se na sjevernom kraju mozambičkog kanala, u Indijskom okeanu, između sjevernog Madagaskara i sjevernog Mozambika, u Komorskom arhipelagu. Mayotte je znan i kao Mahoré, posebno među pristalicama i zagovornicima uključenja ovog ostrva u Komorsku Uniju. Mayotte je ustupljen Francuskoj zajedno sa ostalim Komorima 1843. godine. Referendumima 1974. i 1976. odlučeno je da Mayotte ostane u zajednici sa Francuskom, iako Komori još uvijek tvrde da ostrvo pripada njima.

Mayotte je 2. aprila 2011, u skladu sa referendumom od 29. marta 2009, postao 101. francuski departman.[2] Prema novoj administrativnoj podjeli jedna od 18 administrativnih regija u Francuskoj.

Mayotte se sastoji od više ostrva i ostrvcadi, a najveći su Petite Terre i Grande Terre. Grande Terre[3] je 39 km dug i 22 km širok. Najviše tačke ostrva su Mont Benara (660 m) i Mont Choungui (594 m) i nalaze se kod glavnog i najvećeg grada Mamoudzou.

Tlo je vrlo bogato mineralima zbog vulkanskog porijekla. Na ostrvu Petite Terre se nalazi grad Dzaoudzi koji je do 1962. bio glavni grad Komora, a sad se u njemu nalazi prefektura Mayottea. Ostrvo je površine 10 km2 i na njemu se nalazi aerodrom.
