Dvorac Urfa u jugoistočnoj Turskoj

Edesa (antički grčki: Ἔδεσσα; klasični sirjački: ܐܘܪܗܝ Urhay; armenski: Եդեսիա) je historijsko ime za grad u sjevernoj Mezopotamiji, današnja Şanlıurfa ili Urfa, u jugoistočnoj Turskoj. Edesu je osnovao Seleuk I Nikator. Grčko ime Ἔδεσσα (Édessa) znači "kula u vodi".

Grad se nalazio na obalama rijeke Daysan (starogrčki: Σκίρτος; latinski: Scirtus; turski: Kara Koyun), pritoke rijeke Khabur, a bio je branjen utvrdom Şanlıurfa, visokom centralnom citadelom.[1]

Antiĉka Edesa prethodnica je modernog grada Urfe (turski: Şanlıurfa; kurdski: Riha; arapski: الرُّهَا, romanizirano: ar-Ruhā; armenski: Ուռհա, romanizirano: Urha), u turskoj provinciji Şanlıurfa. Savremeni nazivi grada vjerovatno potiču od imena Urhay ili Orhay (klasični sirijski: ܐܘܪܗܝ, romanizirano: ʾŪrhāy / ʾŌrhāy), koje je predstavljalo sirijsko ime lokaliteta prije ponovnog osnivanja naselja od strane Seleuka I Nikatora. Nakon poraza Seleukida u seleukidsko-partskim ratovima, Edesa je postala prijestolnica Kraljevstva Osroene, s mješovitom sirijskom i helenističkom kulturom.[2][3]
