Tembaring merupakan sejenis ikan kakap yang dapat ditemukan di Indonesia, Malaysia dan Papua Nugini. Di Indonesia ikan ini dikenal juga dengan nama Kakap hitam muara, Somasi hitam, Bale raja, atau Naing. Di Malaysia ikan ini kadang dikenal dengan nama Kanai. Sementara di Papua Nugini dikenal dengan nama Moonfish (ikan bulan) atau Papuan black bass (Bass hitam Papua). Ikan ini memiliki ragam warna yang berbeda-beda, seperti abu-abu, coklat, hitam serta kadang memiliki belang kekuning-kuningan.[1] Tubuh ikan ini bisa tumbuh sampai sepanjang 100 cm.[2][3] Sedangkan beratnya bisa mencapai 20 kilogram (44 pon) meski kebanyakan ikan dewasanya hanya memiliki berat 1–6 kilogram (2,2–13,2 pon).[4] Ikan ini biasa berburu mangsa secara individu.[5]
