O porto de Gênova é o maior porto da Itália. Tem uma extensão de 7.000.000 m² de áreas terrestres e 500 hm² de espelhos d’água, e 22 km de cais. Emprega mais de dez mil trabalhadores diretos e cerca de trinta mil se considerados os empregos indiretos[1][2].
Foi o maior porto em volumes movimentados até 2013, quando o porto de Trieste obteve a liderança sobretudo devido a um substancial aumento nas movimentações de cargas a granel líquidas no Oleoduto Transalpino)[1].
Apresenta calados junto ao cais que variam dos oito metros nas escalas de passageiros até os quinze metros nos grandes terminais de contêineres[1].
