Un messer es una arma de la fin de l'Edat Mejana e de la Renaissença. Aparentat a un sabre o a un coteu de granda talha, aviá generalament una lama drecha de 45 a 90 cm e se teniá d'una man. La garda èra drecha e dotaa d'un esperon laterau destinat a protegir la man dau portaire. Lo messer foguèt fòrça utilizat entre los segles XIV e XVI dins l'espaci germanic per las populacions urbanas qu'avián pas lo drech de portar l'espasa, arma reservaa a la noblessa. De tropas de mercenaris l'adoptèron pereu. Pasmens, dins aqueu segond cas, existissián egalament de messers mai longs, amb una lama de 80 a 135 cm, que s'utilizavan amb doas mans. Mens frequents, èran en usatge dins de tropas professionalas coma los Lansquenets.
