Martin Landau nasquèt en 1928 a Brooklyn, un barri de Nòva York, dins una familha modèsta d'origina jusieva. Son paire, Morris Landau, èra un maquinista emigrat d'Àustria. Estudièt a la James Madison High School e puèi al Pratt Institute abans de començar a trabalhar coma dessenhador quand faguèt 17 ans. Foguèt emplegat pel jornal Daily News e illustrava la cronica de Billy Rose "Pitching Horseshoes". Collaborèt tanben amb Gus Edson sus la benda dessenhada The Gumps durant las annadas 1940 e 1950.
