Jean Chacornac

Jean Chacornac es un astronòm occitan nascut lo 21 de junh de 1823 e mòrt lo 23 de setembre de 1873 a Sant Joan de Roians. Lo nom de Chacornac es originari de Velai o de Vivarés, en Occitània.

Faguèt sos estudis a l’Observatòri de Marselha qu’i venguèt d'ajutòri de Benjamin Valz. Anèt puèi a l’Observatòri de París. Es l’autor d’un Atlas écliptique (1856).

Descobriguèt sièis asteroïdes e una cometa. Lo 21 de setembre de 1852, obsèrva l’asteroïde Massalia, e li dona lo nom ancian de Marselha. Un an après n’obsèrva un autre e li dona lo nom de la metropòli de Marselha, Focea.

L’asteroïde 1622 Chacornac e lo cratèr Chacornac sus la Luna foguèron aital nomenats per li far omenatge.
