En politica, una federacion (del latin fœdus, "pacte"),[1] sovent nomenada tanben estat federal (var. estat federau), es l'union d'un nombre especific d'estats o de regions parcialament autonòmas units per un govèrn central federal.

Dins una federacion, l'estatut d'autonomia dels estats o regions que la constituisson, es normalament reconegut constitucionalament e pòt pas èsser alterat per una decision unilaterala del govèrn central. Las federacions se conforman generalament per acòrd entre los estats e/o regions sobeiranas, encara que gaudisson pas sempre del drech a la secession d'un biais unilateral. La forma de govèrn o l'estructura constitucionala d'una federacion es sonada federalisme e es considerada coma lo concèpte opausat al centralisme.
