La familha elephantidae qu'amassa los animaus existint designats dens la lenga usuau dab lo mot d'elefant e tanben un gran nombre d'animaus fossils (com los genres genres Stegodon e Mammuthus extincts desempuish lo pleïstocèn).
La familha deus elefantids qu'ei actualament compausada de 2 genres:
- Loxodonta: (los elefants africans, amb 2 espècias).
- Loxodonta cyclotis (l'elefant deu bòsc d'Africa)
- Loxodonta africana (l'elefant d'Africa de la savana)
- Elephas: (l'elefant asiatic, amb 1 espècia, actualament).
