Ten un còs, que pòt transportar de passatgièrs o de carga divèrsa, d'alas que permeton a l'avion d'èsser estable dins l'aire, e una coa que li permet de manobrar melhor e favoriza son estabilitat. Segon son emplec se pòdon classificar en avions de passatgers, de carga, militars, d'acrobacia, atudafuòcs, etc. Pòt èsser propulsat per un motor o mai. Los motors son situats sul còs o sus las alas de l'avion en foncion del modèl, o alara pòdon èsser sens motor (dins aqueste darrièr cas l'avion es un planador).
