Underdog

Dalam pertempuran antara Daud dan Goliat, David ialah contoh arketip bagi seorang 'underdog'.

Underdog ialah orang atau kumpulan dalam pertandingan, biasanya dalam sukandan karya kreatif, yang sebahagian besarnya dijangka kalah.[1] Parti, pasukan atau individu yang dijangka menang dipanggil top dog kegemaran atau teratas. Dalam kes di mana underdog menang, keputusannya ialah kecewa. "Pertaruhan underdog" ialah pertaruhan pada underdog atau orang luar yang kemungkinannya lebih tinggi.

Penggunaan pertama yang direkodkan bagi istilah ini berlaku pada separuh kedua abad ke-19;[2][3] makna pertamanya ialah "anjing yang dipukul dalam pergaduhan".[4]
