Type 99, juga dikenali sebagai ZTZ-99 dan WZ-123, telah dibangunkan berdasarkan rekabentuk Type 98G. Ia merupakan sebuah kereta kebal generasi ke-3 yang digunakan oleh Tentera Pembebasan Rakyat. Ia dihasilkan bagi bersaing dengan kereta kebal moden yang lain. Walaupun ia dijangka tidak akan diperoleh dalam jumlah yang besar disebabkan mahal jika dibandingkan dengan kereta kebal Type 96 yang lebih ekonomikal. ZTZ99 dianggap sebagai salah satu dari 12 buah kereta kebal terbaik di dunia[4], dan merupakan penganti kepada kereta kebal Type 98G yang dikeluarkan untuk Tentera Pembebasan Rakyat.
