Probosis

Kupu-kupu mempunyai sepasang sesungut, sepasang mata majmuk, dan sebatang probosis.

Probosis merupakan apendej yang panjang menonjol dari kepala haiwan, baik vertebrat mahupun invertebrat. Bagi invertebrat, istilah ini biasanya memaksudkan anggota mulut berbentuk tiub yang digunakan untuk memakan atau menghirup, contohnya kupu-kupu. Bagi vertebrat, istilah ini memaksudkan pula hidung atau mancung yang teramat panjang (belalai), contohnya gajah.

Istilah probosis berasal dari bahasa Yunani, iaitu προβοσκίς (proboskis),[1] yang terdiri daripada πρό (pro) "ke hadapan, sebelum"[2] + βόσκω (bosko), "makan, menyuburkan".[3][4]
